The Real Living Wage: a powerful step to improving performance

At Glenn Cleaning & Support Services LTD, we’re enthusiastic champions of the Real Living Wage movement, and according to the Living Wage Foundation, 93% of business have seen a benefit since they became accredited.

Since adopting the Real Living Wage our employees feel more valued, and we’ve seen increased engagement from them, which in turn has resulted in real benefits to our clients. Not only do our staff bring forward new ideas for how we can support our customers’ cleaning requirements, but they are innovative in their approach to generating new ideas about the services we provide.

Our employees win, clearly. But so do our clients and so, consequently, do we.

A positive change delivers excellent benefits

We have experienced first-hand the effect the Real Living Wage has had on our staff and how this translates into a better service for our clients.

When you give someone a decent living, you earn their loyalty and appreciation and this results in an immediate improvement in employee relations. Staff motivation and productivity increases, absenteeism reduces, employee retention is enhanced, and you boost your ability to attract high-quality workers.

We are also not alone in our successful experience. According to research, 80% of employers report that their staff have delivered a better quality of work since they have been paid the Real Living Wage. 75% of the employees interviewed agree that their work has materially improved.

A recent survey also suggests that those individuals with a strong sense of well-being at work – who feel valued and appreciated – are those that are paid fairly. They enjoy job security, they develop the capacity for personal initiative, and they exhibit the potential to progress.

There are other benefits, too, less quantifiable but real nevertheless. Paying a living wage greatly improves the reputation of your business. It reassures potential clients and employees that you’re not a ‘grab-and-run’ outfit – that you’re a serious player, in it for the long-term.

For our clients, the impact may not be something which is immediately obvious, but the over-arching effect is a better service from their cleaning team and peace-of-mind that they won’t be let down.
